THE FAMILY TREE PROJECT
FAQ

  1. What is the Family Tree Project?
The Family Tree Project is a online database of my family tree. It links children to two parents. It also records marriages/divorces.
  2. Can I use the Family Tree Project?
The system was designed for my use, but you are free to use it or contact me if you want to create your own private family tree inaccessable to others. Who knows if enough people use this you may find out you are related to me. Scary eh? There are some guidelines which should be followed though.
  3. What are those guidelines?
Well the world is not so simple that every child has two parents. Adoptions, divorces, switched babies and so on are an everyday occurance. As such this system would have to be made much more complex to handle all these 'special cases'. No attempt was made to solve for these cases. This IS NOT a genetic family tree. That being said 'family' is defined as the people you call your mother and father, brothers and sisters. Use your own best judgement on who you call dad and mom when adding yourself to the database. This system is to record families, not genetic bloodlines. However, feel free to add any comments you would like in the bio section.
  4. How do I use the Familty Tree Project?
First you should search the database and see if you are in it yet. If not add yourself and any other family members you wish. You then link yourself to your parents. So if you were adding your whole immediate family you will add yourself then your children. You can also add a parent to a child, but that requires more work. Once you are added, or have searched and found yourself, or searched and found a friend or anyone really you can then read up on their life somewhat. Other options also exist for specific people.
  5. How do I add an entry?
Click the ADD A NEW ENTRY button at the bottom of the screen and follow the directions. Be sure to search and make sure the person you are adding has not yet been added. I recommend you add parents before children since it is easier that way. You can also add parents after children, but that requires a little more work. Follow the directions on screen while adding new people for more details.
  6. I think I may have added someone twice!
Send me an email at peter@petersadlon.com and I will fix it. It could also be the case that two different people building their family trees on the site have added duplicate people. In this case let me know and I will link the trees.
  7. How do I edit an entry?
You can't. Only I can edit entries. Since major chaos can occure from allowing anyone to edit entries I have locked those abilities away from the public. However, this does not mean you can not add more information. When you add a child and specify his parents then the information for the parents will automaticlly be updated to include the new child. The same is true with adding an ancestor to the database.
  8. Why do you ask for my email address?
Emails serve several purposes. First, in the future there may be administration options available to the public. Your email address will act as your password and allow you to edit certain information. Your email is never displayed to the public. However, your city, state and country are. An option will also exist for people to send you an email though the system. They never see your email address, but it will allow realitives to contact each other.
